Pastoral Area Council

                                                                        Our Pastoral Area – February 6, 2025

South Bucks Pastoral Area – Patron, Saint Monica

Area Dean: Rev Mgr. Provost Seán Healy

Our parish belongs to the South Bucks Pastoral Area along with the local  parishes listed on the next page.

The Pastoral Area Council (PAC) is made up of clergy and lay representatives  from each parish. It meets 5 times a year to communicate parish news, strengthen relationships and progress pastoral area-wide initiatives.

Bishop David writes:

‘The Pastoral Area Council is an opportunity to focus our reflection about what it means to be

a missionary disciple. The Church is an apostolic community that receives the life of the Spirit for mission.’

As a parish Bishop David asks us:

‘To be generous; in your prayer of intercession for the parish communities within your Pastoral Area,

in your seeking the way forward to encourage a communion of collaboration between these communities,

in your vision for the way forward and how we can reach out in welcome to those who are called to belong to the

Body of Christ but need our encouragement and accompaniment.’

The PAC:

  • is focussed on the mission of the Church.
  • is agile and open, visionary but approachable.
  • is constructive and realistic, looking for and celebrating small wins.
  • is made of up people who are respectful and caring, and who share a common vision.
  • allows all parishes to feel they have something to contribute.
  • has a clear sense of roles and responsibilities: what the PAC should be doing.
  • has a clear vision with local buy in.
  • has clarity around membership: who belongs and on what basis.
  • members will receive appropriate formation for their roles.
  • can draw on diocesan departments and agencies to support them in being ambitious for their area.
  • allows for opportunities to try new things in a safe way, e.g., a PAC confirmation group where parishes don’t have enough young people to run one every year.

‘A Pastoral Area is not a set of identical units, with each

congregation having to function in the same way. As St Paul

writes, we are a body, with different skills and functions.

Because of its variety, not despite it, the Pastoral Area can be

a representation of the Body of Christ. The role of the Council,

and the Dean and Chair in particular, is to hold that tension

creatively and use it for the building of the Kingdom.

‘The way the Church expresses its communion is through synodality, by meeting, listening, debating, praying, and deciding. The Spirit is always the protagonist and the Lord asks us not to be afraid when the Spirit calls us.

Pope Francis, homily at Mass in Santa Marta Chapel on 28th April 2016.
